Meat production stands for 14.5 % of the gas emission in the world [1]. The average meat consumption in the European Union is 68.3 kg per year [2]. At the same time one third of all produced food is thrown away after passing the expiration date. To reduce carbon emissions for a healthier world, it is therefore necessary to reduce meat consumption.

The smart shelf will help the customers to reduce their meat consumption and decrease the amount of meat that is thrown away on expiration. The user approaches the shelf, chooses the desired type of meat, number of people to buy for and when the meat will be served. The system then calculates the optimal package combinations, based on the input and lights them up. This will make sure the products closer to expiration are picked before the expiration date, while at the same time preventing customers from buying too much meat for their use.

In addition the user will be able to use a personal card, with some stored parameters, to simplify the choice even further.
