Vision Statement

Trash-IT is an intelligent waste collection system that reduces human workload and increases efficiency within an eating environment. The problem of waste disposal within a dining establishment affects both staff and customers throughout the day by leaving tables unoccupied but covered in trash and dishes. These tables are therefore rendered useless to both the customers and the business, resulting in a loss of customer satisfaction and profit. Ambient detection allows the Trash-IT system to integrate seamlessly into any environment and minimize the amount of time a table is dirty after use. Trash-IT will detect when customers vacate a table, as well as waste subsequently left behind. The system will then alert the staff of this information, and a collection bin will autonomously move to the table that needs to be cleaned. Staff need only to walk directly to the table of concern and move dishes and trash from the table to the Trash-IT collection bin, dramatically reducing the time, focus, and ergonomic stress required of staff to clean a table. Additionally, customers entering a facility will be presented with information regarding table occupation. In the case that a customer would like to sit at a table that still has a previous customer’s dishes, that customer can select the table on an interactive display and proceed to it. The Trash-IT collection system will simultaneously travel to that table where the customer will then be able to easily clear the table on their own and sit down. The Trash-IT system eliminates the need for humans to carry heavy dishes or trash across an eating environment to a stationary trash can, reducing overall foot traffic around tables and increasing efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Ambient Intelligence

The Trash-IT system fulfills the steps of an Ambient Intelligent System in the following ways:

Sensing

The bin detects the tables that need to be cleared and the presence of customers at a table.

Reasoning

The bin recognizes that a table needs to be cleared out in order to let anybody else sit.

Interacting

The system will accept commands from users and notify users on the status of tables

Acting

The bin moves to a table for that table to be cleared.


Trash-IT features the following traits of an Ambient Intelligent System:

AmI Feature Description
Sensitive The system recognizes the presence of trash on tables and customers and waiters in the evironment. The system also senses obstacles in the path of the trash bin.
Responsive The system can send the bin to tables that need to be cleared when customers desire to sit there and will respond to waiter availability.
Adaptive The system takes environmental data as well as user input into account when determining where the bin should be.
Intelligent The system uses computer vision, path-finding algorithms, and decision-making algorithms in order to successfully move the bin to various tables at the correct time.
